About
The Open Home Foundation is a tax-exempt Swiss Stiftung (foundation) that supports open-source smart-home projects and open connectivity and communication standards. Its stated principles are privacy, choice, and sustainability, with a focus on local control, optional cloud services, open standards, local APIs, device interoperability, and hardware reuse.
Founded in 2024, the foundation brings together work that began with Home Assistant in 2013. It owns and governs more than 250 open-source projects, standards, drivers, and libraries, including Home Assistant, ESPHome, Music Assistant, HACS, Piper, Zigpy, Matter.js, and Z-Wave JS. It also collaborates on external projects such as WLED and Zigbee2MQTT.
The foundation is funded through commercial partner fees and donations. Its current commercial partners are Nabu Casa and Apollo Automation, and it states that this funding supports more than 50 full-time employees. Paulus Schoutsen, founder of Home Assistant, serves as President of the foundation’s board.
The Open Home Foundation’s work spans open-source software, device connectivity, community development, product and UX, ecosystem partnerships, privacy advocacy, and smart-home sustainability.
