North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
04 September 2026
Overview
A political and military alliance of European and North American countries committed to collective security.
About
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental political and military alliance founded in 1949. It brings together sovereign member countries from Europe and North America to consult on political and security issues and to make collective decisions by consensus.
NATO’s purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. Collective defence is at the core of the Alliance: an attack against one Ally is considered an attack against all Allies. NATO also works to prevent and manage crises, strengthen resilience, cooperate with partners and address emerging security challenges.
NATO Headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium. The Secretary General is the Alliance’s top international civil servant and chairs the North Atlantic Council, NATO’s principal political decision-making body. Mark Rutte has served as Secretary General since 2024.
